Bree vodka

grapes

This is a review of Bree vodka from Germany. I sampled it in Germany in 2013. It’s clear, 40% alcohol, and it’s made from grapes.

We’ve already had a few German vodka brands on this blog, and here’s another one: Bree vodka is produced by Weingut Mertes, one of the biggest producers of wine in Germany. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this vodka is made not from wheat, rye, or potatoes, but from grapes.

has Bree vodka been discontinued?

I went to the website of Weingut Mertes to check out what they had to say about their vodka, but there was nothing:

I sent them an email to inquire. Maybe they’ll respond.

Anyway, back to our vodka.

the rules

Our society seems to enjoy coming up with rules and regulations – everything has to have an official standard. Sometimes this is good. I love USB-C, for example. But sometimes the standards only seem to exist in order to be broken.

I’m not sure about vodka for example. There have been some rather fierce debates about its official origin story. Is vodka originally Russian? Is it Polish? Or maybe Ukrainian?

Be that as it may, there have also been some discussions about the approval (or disproval) of certain ingredients – can you only call it a vodka if it’s made from wheat or potatoes? Or could it also be made from something else?

What if vodka was made from… grapes?

tastes like vodka

And here you have it. Bree vodka is made from grapes, and it tastes like a normal, good vodka.

The initial taste was smooth. There was a hint of sweetness in it, and it didn’t burn much on the way down. I felt like I was missing some of that warm feeling in aftertaste, though. Not sure if that has anything to do with the grapes.

The bottle design looked okay to me, and the price of about 13€ for 700ml was very good.

a novelty

All in all, Bree vodka is alright. It’s definitely good enough for the price, but it also doesn’t taste like anything special. So I guess a reason to buy this vodka would be if you wanted to try something new.

Just don’t expect it to taste like grapes, because it doesn’t. People make vodka from all kinds of things, and they use all kinds of materials to filter it, but that doesn’t mean it tastes like those things.
