too sweet, goddammit
[38%, flavored, sampled in Germany]
Żołądkowa Gorzka is from Poland, and I guess you could write it as Zoladkowa Gorzka as well. The thing about it is this: it’s not just vodka – it’s herbal vodka. I was actually wondering if I should even consider it for this site at all, since it’s not a regular vodka. But then I thought what the heck, we’ve had a few flavored brands here already, right?
about flavored vodka
Normally when you drink a flavored vodka like Georgievskaya Birch, Kalinovaya, or Nemiroff Honey Pepper, it’s just regular vodka that has just been infused with something. Sometimes this influences the taste drastically, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it even alters the color. What it never does is change the texture of the vodka, though.
But this herbal vodka is not like that. Żołądkowa Gorzka has a thick, almost oily texture. It feels more like a liqueur, not like a vodka.
Żołądkowa Gorzka is smooth
Maybe the thick texture of Żołądkowa Gorzka is precisely why it goes down so easily. It’s like drinking a smooth, 40-proof liqueur. The problem is that it tastes way too sweet, especially in the aftertaste, which seems to belong to some sort of herbal medicine.
The bottle looks alright, and the price is excellent: I got this for around 10€ for 700ml.
how to mix this
I wouldn’t recommend having Żołądkowa Gorzka neat and at room temperature. It’s too sweet for that.
Chill it instead, and then mix one unit of it with two units of tonic water. Add some fresh lemon juice. The taste will be vaguely similar to gin tonic. At least it won’t be as sweet anymore.
